    Multimedia Library: Programs for Russian Language Instruction  
     

BBC SERIES, "RUSSIAN LANGUAGE AND PEOPLE"  
20 video programs for beginners.  25 min. each.  The programs are based on documentary film shot by the BBC in Moscow and Leningrad, Soviet films and television programs, and a 15-part drama serial, which relates the adventures of Olga, a student, and her taxicab driver boyfriend, Viktor. (Parts13-16 missing)

30 minute tapes with short episodes.  Accompanied by print materials. 

    1. "Central Television"
            Six independent episodes.  Each has an excerpt  from a television program, including 
            "Vremia," "Vzgliad," "7 dnei," "Do i posle polunochi," and "Televiktorina." 
    2.  "Theater"
            In the four episodes, there are interviews with theater-goers, directors,  actors, and 
            actresses. 

CONVERSATIONS WITH RUSSIAN WRITERS  
Videotaped interviews conducted by John Glad.  These tapes are unedited and some of them contain minor technical flaws produced during recording. Each interview lasts approximately one hour. There are two interviews on each video cassette.

IN SEARCH OF ORLOVSKY:  A VIDEO MYSTERY    1997 
A 98-minute video with a 192-page Video Resource Manual and a Teaching Resource Manual.  The cassette consists of twelve episodes in which the two main characters, Masha and Dennis, try to solve a mystery, meeting nine other Russian characters along the way.  Each video episode corresponds to a lesson in the intermediate Russian textbook, Russian Faces and Voices, but the video can be used with any textbook.  Developed by Leonid B. Shamshin, Zita D. Dabars, and Ellina Yu. Sosenko, in association with the American Council of Teachers of Russian and the Center of Russian Language and Culture (CORLAC), Friends School.

"LET'S GET ACQUAINTED" A SUNY/SOVIET TV PROJECT  

Cassette I: (Elementary level)

  1. The Robot 
    This story takes place in Leningrad. A man invents a robot and teaches him to talk. The robot walks through the city in search of the subway. His inventor searches for the robot and finally finds him. 

  2. Hello, Tallin 
    A family of four takes a vacation to Tallin. Their sightseeing becomes humorous when members of the family get separated. 

  3. Where Do You Work? 
    Nikolai spends his day off fishing and boating. He is confused by the fact that he is addressed by an inquisitive individual who remains out of sight. 

Cassette II: (Intermediate)

  1. Do You Have Any Vacancies? 
    More than one guest with the name Komarov checks into a hotel. Not knowing to which a telegram  is addressed, the clerk reads it to occupants of all the rooms occupied by a Komarov. 

  2. A Hearty Appetite 
    An overweight man is put on a diet and exercise regime by his wife, but he manages to elude her plans. Most of  the scenes take place in a restaurant and focus on ordering food. Very amusing. 

  3. The Golden Ring 
    A film crew visits Rostov, Kostroma, and Suzdal in order to film folk ensembles performing in settings dominated by historical monuments. Included in the cast is a lively young girl. 

LIVE FROM MOSCOW: EXCERPTS FROM SOVIET TV, READINGS FROM THE SOVIET PRESS (SD) 1988 
Ten programs on the videotape. Each is accompanied by exercises and an article on the subject.  The topics are: Bor'ba s samogonovareniem; Markovskie vecherki; Obshchestvo "Fauna"; Tserkov' Petra i Pavla; Novoe predpriiatie sluzhby byta; Novosel'e; O podvige pozharnykh Tomska; Tsiklon na Sakhaline; Zabroshennye khoziaistva; Den' sovetskoi  militsii. RUSSIAN STAGE ONE:  LIVE FROM MOSCOW, VOLUME I   1996
This two-hour video series presents the adventures and experiences of a young American living in Moscow.  The cassette accompanies a beginning Russian textbook, workbook, and audiotape.  By Dan Davidson, Kira Gor, and Maria Lekic, in association with the American Council of Teachers of Russian.  Volume II materials are also available. 

RUSSIAN THEMES    1997 
A 100-minute video with a 192-page Video Resource Manual and a Teaching Resource Manual.  The cassette consists of twelve "themes" in which four Russian students invite viewers to see the way they live.  Each video theme corresponds to a lesson in the  textbook, The World of Russians (Mir russkikh), but the video can be used with any intermediate to advanced textbook.  Developed by Leonid B. Shamshin, Zita D. Dabars, and Ellina Yu. Sosenko, in association with the American Council of Teachers of Russian and the Center of Russian Language and Culture (CORLAC), Friends School.
