CIA World Factbook  A good place to find basic information about any country.  Has maps and statistics.
The Library of Congress Country Studies  A continuing series of books prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. This online series presently contains studies of 100 countries.
Lonely Planet Destinations  Though geared towards people intending to travel, Lonely Planet provides some basic information about the various countries of the world on these sites.  Search by region or by country, or type in the desired country's name.
Slavic and East European Folklore Association  SEEFA is a non-profit organization devoted to an exchange of knowledge among scholars interested in Slavic and East European folklore. Their web site has information about the association's activities at conferences, contents for the SEEFA journal, and articles and bibliographical information for Bulgarian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, and Ukrainian folklore. 


Russia

The Alexander Palace Time Machine  At this site created by Bob Atchison, take a tour of Russian palaces and access biographies, diaries and Romanov memorabilia.
Birch Empire  Devoted to Russia's politics, history, and culture.  This page has daily updated Russia related news from the world's leading newspapers and news agencies, a KGB site where you can browse various files on the KGB's most prominent figures and operations, a site devoted to former Soviet Republics with basic information and links for each, and a message board.
Christiaan Stange's Dostoevsky Resource Station  Billed as "one man's humble part-time attempt to create THE definitive reference site" for the study of the famous Russian author, this webpage delivers. The Dostoevsky Resource Station has a chronology, bibliography, critical works, quotations, an image gallery, relevant links, and more.
Chronology of Russian History    Recently updated with more links to sites with detailed descriptions of specific events and people, Bucknell University's Chronology of Russian History is one of  the best sites on Russian history and an excellent resource for teachers and students alike.   Gr. 9+.
Dazhdbog's Grandchildren  Created by Sergei Naumov, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dazhdbog's Grandchildren is a culture-oriented site featuring some music, poetry, cuisine, and images.
Forced Labor Camps  A website on the Gulag established by Open Society Archives, with pictures, historical information, and links to related sites.
Guide to the History of Russian and Soviet Science and Technology
Internet Movie Database Russian language films  A catalog of almost 3500 Russian films. In English.
Kamchatka: Grizzlies of the Russian Far East  Follow two naturalists as they study bears in the Kamchatka Peninsula wilderness.
Library of Congress Country Studies:  Russia

Library of Congress: The Empire That Was Russia  This site has a collection of photos taken by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii, photographer to the tsar, between 1905 and 1915.  Excellent images.
Library of Congress Soviet Archive Exhibit  Of interest to students in upper grades (9-12). This mostly text web site is devoted to the Soviet era top-secret archives of the Central Committee of the Communist Party made public after 1991.  It includes some interesting primary source materials related to subjects such as the Secret Police, the  GULags, collectivization, and Chernobyl'.
Maksim Moshkow's Library  Huge library of on-line texts, in Russian.
Meeting of Frontiers This web site is a bilingual, multimedia English-Russian digital library that tells the story of the American exploration and settlement of the West, the parallel exploration and settlement of Siberia and the Russian Far East, and the meeting of the Russian-American frontier in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. It includes more than 2,500 items, comprising some 70,000 images, from the Library of Congress rare book, manuscript, map, film and sound recording collections.
The Moscow Guide  City guide
Moscow Life   Send your students to this web site to find out what Russian daily life is like.  The page is basically a running journal and photo gallery created by Andrey Sebrant, a journalist.  He discusses everything from a day in Gorky Park and Moscow weather to sporting events.
Novgorod State United Museum In Russian or English. In addition to information about the museum's collections and exhibits, this nice site has images and histories of Velikyi Novgorod's architectural monuments from the 9th to 17th centuries.
Panorama  From its inception in 1989, Panorama has specialized in detailed reports on new political organizations and the views of their leaders.  Contains a large store of information on reform and civil society in the former Soviet Union, and is a useful resource on elections and the main parties and politicians.  Mainly in Russian, with some English.
The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts A small page with descriptions of the collection of the fine Moscow art museum.  Includes nice, clear images of some of their more famous works.
The Red Book of the Peoples of the Russian Empire  A compilation of some 85 ethnic minorities, with information on population, customs, location, language and the like.
The Russian Chronicles A journalist and photographer travel from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg, filing interesting personal stories and pictures directly onto the webpage.
Russian feminism: resources  This site is a directory of online resources about Russian women, women's studies and the women's movement in the Former Soviet Union

Russian National Tourist Office Guide to Russia  Features nice, clear images and good, brief write-ups of Russia's history and art and architecture.
Russian Paintings  A very attractive site designed and maintained by Dr. Alexander Boguslawski at Rollins College.  Contains a lot of information about and works from various movements and  painters throughout Russian history. 
A Russia Phototrack Links to photo galleries of various cities and regions in Russia.
Sibirskaia Zaimka  On Siberia.  In Russian with an autotranslator.
St. Petersburg Homepage  City guide
The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia  Sometimes the web is almost as good as the real thing! The Hermitage has a very attractive web site (in Russian or in English), with a virtual tour and enough reading material to keep you busy for quite a while. A nice technological innovation allows you to zoom in for an even closer look at some of the pieces.

Washington Post Siberia Diary  In August 2001, Robert G. Kaiser and Lucian Perkins of the Wshington Post took a month-long expedition in Siberia to report on the people and natural resources of Russia's most abundant region. Good stories and images.
Washington Post Timeline:  Yeltsin's Reforms and Economic Turmoil  A nice chronology, with linked articles, of Yeltsin's political career and policy decisions since 1985.


Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova

Belarus National Centre of Legal Information  Access to the Belarus legal information databank and news of Belarus legislation. Some legal acts are available in English.

Traditional Ukrainian Wedding Rituals  View photos and read descriptions of traditional Ukrainian weddings on this page and its link, compiled by Natalie Kononenko from the University of Virginia.
Virtual Guide to Belarus  Belarusian history, culture, politics, geography, and so on. Developed as a collaborative effort by a group of Belarusian scientists working around the world.
UA Zone  The Ukrainian Information Project features a Ukraine factbook, a guide to Kiev, and a lot of photo galleries.
Ukrainian Icon Gallery  This site has thumbnails and larger images of 25 Ukrainian icons from the 11th to 16th centuries.  A paragraph explaining the subject and the work's origins accompanies each icon.


The Baltic States

Eesti Rahva Muuseum / The Estonian National Museum  Designed to be a complete treasury of Estonian cultural heritage, the musuem in Tartu primarily features ethnographical objects. The web site, available in Estonian and English, includes some nice "virtual exhibitions."
Estonia's Folk Traditions  Written descriptions of Estonian holidays and the customs observed on those days.
Internet Resources on Latvia  Government, news and media, academic links. Compiled by the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London.
